Sephora PLAY! October 2018

Sephora Play!

Hiya!!

I was pretty excited this month because I received my Sephora Play box pretty quickly this month.

This is my favorite subscription box because you get a lot of products sold at Sephora and it’s only $10.

I’m most excited about the Replica perfume sample called “Sailing Day” because I love their Beach Walk fragrance and really wanted to try this fragrance.  It says it is for male and female and is very clean without smelling like laundry detergent so that’s cool.

I also wanted to try the fresh Soy Face cleanser as I am running out of my Sunday Riley face wash.

I have tried Make Up Forever before and didn’t really care for it but that was a while ago.  Foundations are my favorite products to try so I’m up for it.

Caudalie Vinoperfect serum I have tried and it was okay.  The other two products from Tarte and Benefit I have received before but still good for travel.

Overall, I’m okay with this month’s box.  It wasn’t the greatest ever but still worth the $10.

Empties!!

I finally went through my bin of used skincare, beauty, and random products I have used over the last few months and decided to make a post about it. I love to watch YouTube empties videos so I thought I would try it.

  1. Kevin Murphy Shampoo & Conditioner– These were travel size shampoo and conditioner that I have had for over a year that I just used for travel and finally used up.  Really liked these but I have other shampoo products to go through.  I would recommend and repurchase once I am finished with my current products.

2. Pureology Hydrate Shampoo/ Conditioner– More hair products.  Really like this brand and would definitely repurchase.

3. Amika Shampoo/ Conditioner– I really loved the hair conditioner that can be used as a mask or just daily conditioner.  The purple shampoo was fairly drying so I only used about once a week.  All of the Amika products have the best smell so I would buy again just because it smells so nice.

  1. Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream LOVE! Have repurchased many times.

Ahava Dead Sea Mineral Hand Cream– I got this in a FabFitFun box a while ago and finally finished it.  It was nice but I probably wouldn’t go out to buy it.

Pacifica Hawaiian Ruby Guava Body Butter– I have purchased this many times and I will for sure by again.  I love the smell and the formula.

2. Cremo Classic Original Shave Cream– This is marketed for men but works just as well for women for shaving.  It makes my legs super soft and moisturized so I will continue to repurchase.

Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub– I started using this after watching Jennifer Ross (PrettyNeatLiving on YouTube) years ago and have repurchased numerous times. It’s a great exfoliator without being drying or too abrasive.

  1. Drunk Elephant  –

I have used about 90% of Drunk Elephant’s products for at least 2 years but I have since moved on to other products.  I love the aesthetic and clean ingredients in the Drunk Elephant products but they are really pricey and didn’t seem to agree with my skin type.  I gave it a serious try but my skin has actually improved since stopping the DE regime.  So. I am just about the only person in the universe who doesn’t like Drunk Elephant, ha!

Shiseido Facial Cotton– I mean, are these necessary no? But are they awesome? Uh, yeah! That is all.

Lancome Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover– This is the travel size but I have repurchased the full size many times so love it.

I got the Kate Somerville Wrinkle Warrior serum and Lancer Mask as samples from Sephora and didn’t notice much difference with KS but loved the Lancer…I would purchase the Lancer mask but it is a bajillion dollars at Sephora so we’ll see.

Lancer The Method:Polish– Loved it! It is pricey but this bottle lasted about 2 years as I only used it a few times a week and very sparingly.  Will repurchase once I use up my other exfoliators.

Kiehl’s Eye Treatment with Avocado– love it, will definitely repurchase.

Perricone MD Skin Perfecting Serum– This replaced the DE serums and I love it.  My skin is clearer than it has been in a while.  I have already repurchased!

And that is all, whew!

FabFitFun Fall Box 2018

Hello, internet!

I was so excited to get my FabFitFun box for fall 2018 because this is my favorite subscription box! I used to really like the Popsugar Must Have monthly box that was around $40 a month but has since moved to $80 a month and you get bigger and better things supposedly.  I couldn’t really justify spending that much a month for a subscription box so enter Fab Fit Fun box! It is a seasonal quarterly box that is $49.99 plus tax and usually has a great assortment of lifestyle and beauty goodies. I have gotten it off and on for about 4 years but decided to return to the service for the fall box and I am pretty happy with that decision.

Several of the items like the Vince Camuto bag and Alfred tea pot I have decided to set aside for Christmas presents but the other items I am really excited about.

  1. GLAMGLOW Bubble Mask

2. Grown Alchemist Polishing Facial Exfoliant

3. COBRA Bluetooth Earbuds

4. Beauty Blender

5. Farmacy Dew It All Total Eye Cream

6. Skin & Co Roma Blue in Capri

7. Simply Whimsical Tea Towels

8.. ALFRED Tea Pot

9. Vinca Camuto x FabFitFun Tote

The item I was most excited about was the Beauty Blender because duh! But overall, really happy with this box and can’t wait for the winter box.

Boxycharm October 2018

Hello, internet! I’m actually posting about a subscription box in the same month I received it! Go, me!

I really like the Boxycharm subscription as it is only $21 a month and includes enough full size products that total up usually way more than that.  Having said that, I have canceled the box.  I really liked this month’s box but I am trying to be less materialistic and let go of some of the over consuming of these boxes.  It really just comes down to I love getting new stuff in the mail but I have noticed that these items don’t bring me as much joy as they once did.  In this thing called adult hood (yuck) I have tried to focus more on the things I truly love and spend my money a little more wisely.  Maybe that will change in the future, but as of now, I don’t want anymore samples or lipsticks that I will probably never use.

So, moving on to the box. I’m trying a new format for these posts so we will see how it works.

  1. IT Cosmetics Superhero Elastic Stretch Mascara– This was actually the whole reason for keeping this month’s subscription.  This mascara was my favorite a few years ago then I tried other mascaras and kind of forgot about it.  It’s around $24 usually so I was really excited it was one of the items in the box.  Word of caution…it can be a little clumpy but for the most part it is easy to work with.

2. Dermovia Lace A Peel Black Bamboo Charcoal Mask, set of 2– So normally I enjoy trying new face masks.  I have watched two of my favorite YouTubers try these masks and they seem a little intense for my sensitive skin.  I will probably save these as a stocking stuffer for my sister.  But, Amazon lists them for $55 for 5 so these value around $22 for 2.

3. Pharmacy Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleanser– This was the second item I was most excited to try.  I am also using a moisturizer and eye cream from this brand that I received in a previous FabFitFun so I am anxious to try more products from this brand.  I have been using the Clinique Cleansing balm but once I am out of that, I will reach for this.  I do like the brand’s vibe of healthier, cleaner products.  The balm is valued at around $32.

4. Kat von D Liquid Everlasting Lipstick in Mother– $18, Not a huge fan usually of liquid lipsticks but I am working on stepping out of my comfort zone.  It is a pretty mauve, berry color that should go well in the fall.

5. PUR Cosmetics Boxycharm exclusive, Face and Eyeshadow palette– Ok, so, let’s be real…I need another eyeshadow palette like I need…another eyeshadow palette.  Like, really?  This is part of the reason I stopped subscribing.  We got some sort of palette last month and the month before that.  They are pretty but I just don’t get excited about it so I will probably pass it along.

I think there are some variations of this box but these are just the products I received.  Thanks for reading!

September 2018 BoxyCharm

I’m posting a little late seeing as I just got my October Boxycharm in the mail today but we’re just going to go with it.

Apart from Sephora Play, Boxycharm is my next favorite monthly subscription box.  They tend to send mostly full priced items and usually from brands I recognize. It is more expensive than the Sephora, Ipsy, and Birchbox at $21.99 plus tax but has a much higher value.

This month’s theme was “Wildflower” and came with a nice booklet describing the products in this month’s box.

The biggest item was the Nightingale eyeshadow palette from PRETTY VULGAR retailed at $35.  The swatches (bottom right corner) were pigmented but I decided to gift this to a friend as I have plenty of eyeshadow palettes.  Still, great item and high value. Next, was a baked blush from Laura Geller that has really pretty gold and pink specks.  I have used this for the past month and really enjoyed it.  It just gives your cheeks a nice rosy glow without being glittery. Boxycharm usually includes some sort of makeup brush and this month was an eyeshadow trio from Alamar cosmetics.  I have yet to use them but they feel really soft and seem well made.  I also appreciated that they sent eyeshadow brushes to go with the palette. The last two items I was on the fence about.  A liquid lipstick from Hank and Henry beauty which I have never heard of and an eye liner from Butter London.  The liquid lipstick formula seemed nice in the swatch but was just a little dark for my preferences.  The eyeliner has a weird circle applicator like a pizza cutter and was really difficult to apply.

Overall, I was still impressed at the this month’s value, around $120 for a $21 box.  Not too bad.  As mentioned above, I am still subscribed to this box so here’s hoping next month’s box will be even better!

As always, thanks for reading!

September 2018 Sephora Play & Birchbox

So I have been receiving the Sephora Play box for about 2 years and have enjoyed it for the most part.  It’s only $10 a month and usually includes what amounts to the products you get when you redeem rewards at checkout at Sephora.  I usually feel like I get my $10 worth with these boxes and every month includes a 50 point reward that you can apply to your account in store (which I have yet to do…I know, shameful). I also really like this subscription because all of the products are ones sold in Sephora so I either know the brand or it is a name brand product that I haven’t tried but at least recognize the brand.  All of that being said, this month was not the greatest.  I already had the Sunday Riley moisturizer (a reward I redeemed during a previous Sephora order) and used it previously.  It wasn’t anything really special but still great travel size.  I love the Too Faced coconut primer so that was nice but the sample was teeny tiny.  Viktor Rolfe perfume sample was just okay and the Sephora brand mascara was another nice travel product.  I am looking forward to trying the Peter Thomas Roth mask because I generally really like that brand.  Last product was a lip and cheek product by Nudestix in “Kiss”.  Lip products are my least favorite because they are either a random color that was left over or just not my style. Overall, not terrible but not great. But for $10, I can live it.  Again, the point is that next month will be better so that’s where they keep me hanging on to my subscription every month.

This month’s Birchbox was honestly underwhelming for me.  I have already cancelled the box for October because I just didn’t feel compelled to keep receiving it.  I used to really enjoy this box and it’s relatively inexpensive in terms of a beauty and skin care subscription box.  Like Sephora Play and Ipsy, Birchbox is $10 a month and usually has skin care and beauty samples according to your beauty profile.

So this month, I received 5 samples.  First was a moisturizer from Avéne that was pretty small.  The Vasanti makeup wipes would have been useful for travel but once I opened them, they were about a quarter of the size of a regular makeup remover wipe so they were a little difficult to use. The product I will most likely get use out of is the QUAI wave hair spray.  It is a texturizing spray that gives body and volume without drying it out.  The last two products were Love of Color shadow stick and Clarins water lip stain.  The eyeshadow stick was like a champagne gold that is pretty but nothing really special.  The lip product was like a watery weird formula in a cherry color but since it was difficult to apply, I will probably pass on.

Even though the Sephora box wasn’t my favorite, I still enjoyed it over the Birchbox. And of course, different variations were sent so this was just one combination of products.

I’m Coming Home

Isn’t always weird to go back home after being away for a while? Even if it’s only for a week or a weekend, home seems to always have a sheen of unfamiliarity but also normalcy all at the same time.  I went back home to Tennessee this past weekend and was struck at how weird yet normal everything seemed.  I have been away for over a year now and still feel like an inbetween-er.  Neither place is my home.  Not yet anyway.

I started thinking why does that place that I lived for most of life suddenly feel somewhat distant? The roads were the same.  I went the same route to my favorite restaurant, there was the dog bakery where I bought many doggy treats. And there is my favorite Target where I spent countless hours wasting my money every Friday on payday.  And yet, I still looked forward to returning to my now home 500 miles away.  I am an inbetween-er.  The home where I was is no longer the home I am in now.  I am not the same as I was a year ago. Every experience over the past 16 months has shifted my lens of what it means to be home.

I hope to find my place here in this new town and find that same comfort I felt before moving.  I know it will be a gradual transition until one day it just seems normal to be in this little house tucked away in the hills of Georgia.
